2008 Year.End

Posted by joseph on December 18th, 2008

After our endless laboring, debating and reflecting on a year’s worth of music, it all comes to this. We’re closing out the year with a collection of tracks from some of our favorite albums of 2008. It’s been a great year back on the air, and many thanks to WCRS and all of our listeners in Columbus, elsewhere, and beyond. Below you’ll find our consensus “10 Beat Oracle Approved: 08 Edition,” as well as our individual recommendations and favorites. We’ll return on New Year’s Day with an intense mix of our favorite singles (12”, Remix, and non-favorite album tracks) from the year. So stay tuned for more “future music” in 09.

The End is High

Posted by joseph on December 11th, 2008

The year is coming to a close and we’re still buried in records. The first hour brings some stark electronic cuts, and features essential dubstep releases from Darkstar, Zomby, and The Others. The second half is highlighted with stellar new tracks from Dntel, Flying Lotus, Vibert/Simmons, The Sight Below, and Fennesz.

Stay tuned next week as we run through the best of 2008, and reveal our favorite albums and singles. Not to be missed!

Kaleidoscope In Stereo

Posted by joseph on December 5th, 2008

We returned to the Sells Studio this week, cheerful and bloated with holiday pies.   The first hour moves from the abstract and psychedelic to classic reggae and soul.  Hour two turns up the tempo with hip-hop, while Kenny and Michael serve up their usual helping of colorful future music. Among the classics, we dropped new tracks from Gang Gang Dance, Deerhunter,  Q-Tip, Black Milk, and Ital Tek.

Slowly (again)

Posted by michael on December 3rd, 2008

We celebrated Thanksgiving here at the Beat Oracle by airing one of our favorite shows we’ve ever recorded, our 2-hour summer 2008 ambient special. You can click below to get the original podcast from last July, which did not include any of our talking. If you are new to the show, please be sure to check it out (as we won’t be re-podcasting it).

10 Hour Update

Posted by joseph on November 21st, 2008

Apologies are in order (again). A web update has been long overdue . We’ve been asleep at the wheel, busy with graduate studies, jobs, and the routine scratching of bums. However, we’ve managed to piece together the usual weekly program, and those listeners that subscribe to our podcast should be up to speed. For everyone else, here is a ten-hour glimpse of the past month:

Despite winter’s early arrival making us a little grumpy, this latest episode has lifted our spirits. The set features our usual blend of diverse future-music, including brand new cuts from Q-Tip, Murs, Ladyhawke, The Tough Alliance, Thom Yorke, and Benga. Stay inside and dance along.

All modesty aside, last week’s show might be one of the best. Homemade banana bread inspires hour one, and reveals new tracks from Black Milk, TV On The Radio, Luomo and SCSI-9. Dubstep and ambient dominate the second half, featuring new singles from D1 and Martyn. Listen and lounge.

History is celebrated, as Barack Obama is elected President!  The entire set is dedicated to dancing, shaking, and cathartic nonsense! (Hey, we’ve earned it) President-elect Obama also mails in, sharing a few of his favorite songs with our listeners. As if you needed an excuse to pop open a few bottles…

For this episode Michael grew an ironic mustache and dusted off his skinny jeans for a first hour wrought with excessive indieness. Things become sensible in hour two, with dubstep and experimental tracks leading the way. Loads of new cuts from the likes of The Sea and Cake, Of Montreal, El Guincho, Bjork, Conquest, Helios, Deerhunter, and more!

The release season continues to be kind with stellar new tracks from Murs, Madlib, Panda Bear, MGMT, Jonas Bering, Shed, and Bomb the Bass (!). This comes highly recommended by the Sells Studio office staff, as well as Michael’s dog, Mia.

Peak Season

Posted by joseph on October 17th, 2008

Autumn is here and the release season continues to heat up with new music from Max Tundra, The Herbaliser, Roots Manuva, Windy & Carl, Jim O’Rourke and more. In hour one Michael brings the beats as  Kenny returns from CA with an arsenal of records and drops some must-listen finds. Hour two winds down and things turn ambient. Screw in your red light bulbs and ponder the cosmos, indeed.

Last week our friend Micah joined us in the studio and dropped some mindbending material. He raised the stakes, and the proof is here. The two-hours features fresh tracks from Mogwai, TV on the Radio,  Aidan Baker & Tim Hecker, Benoit Pioulard, Luomo, and more. Enjoy!

Posted by joseph on October 9th, 2008

Last week the show officially moved to its new 2-hour time slot  (Thursdays 9-11 PM on WCRS 98.3/102.1 LPFM Columbus). In the first half, Michael and I dropped fresh tracks from Osborne, Koushik, Ruckus Roboticus, and Gang Gang Dance. The midway/second half features a great mega-mix courtesy of Kenny and his electric hair. Highly recommended…by (ahem) us.
